How does a beloved character in literature become an iconic figure in popular culture?
I love Sherlock Holmes! I have read all of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories. I have watched just about every television movie and show. I have enjoyed most of the actors who have portrayed Holmes (with the exception of Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law) from Basil Rathbone to Jeremy Brett, to the current Holmes, Benedict Cumberbatch. I love Sherlock Holmes!
As I was exploring Youtube, I found this Ted-Ed video about Sherlock Holmes. I think it would be a great resource for middle school or high school English Literature classrooms. The video explores the differences between Doyle’s version of Holmes and the version we know from television and movies.
A great unit introduction or mid-unit discussion point about how Doyle’s character has evolved since Holmes’s introduction in 1886 (A Study in Scarlett).
