ReBlog: Strategies for Supporting Counting & Cardinality Skills

Author TLanette Pollard as a Power Puff Girl

Primary students need to have strong counting and number sense skills to continue mastering important math skills as they get older. This is why I encourage parents of new first graders to focus on counting skills during the summer and throughout the school year.

Adding and subtracting are important. However, if my students don’t have an understanding of counting and representing numbers, both skills will be difficult to master.

Students’ early counting skills are an important predictor of later abilities. In fact, students who can recite and count to 20 in preschool have the highest math skills in first grade. vkrp_uva January 16, 2018
